The Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka University has succeeded in engineering a Petawatt laser designed to deliver up to two quadrillion watts for a duration of one-trillionth of one second. That corresponds to 1,000 times the integrated electric power consumed in the world today.
By using this high power laser, it is now possible to generate all of the high energy quantum beams used in research, including electrons, ions, gamma rays, neutrons, and positrons.
